Impressive little coffee shop, Sidekick, is in the main street of Margaret River just along from the IGA and across the car park from Settlers Tavern – glass all round with seats inside and out – quite a small space but benches along the windows add to the seating available.
I dropped in for breakfast while in town earlier this week – they have a smallish menu serving breakfast, light meals, cakes and slices, and juices throughout the day.
Their coffee is particularly good – using Dukes apparently – and the flat white I ordered was smooth with a sweet nutty flavour, good bitterness at palate’s end, and served at the right temperature to avoid burning the coffee.
My breakfast bagel was also of high quality – the bagel chewy with a crusty skin, smeared with jalapeno spread which provided a great little zip and lift which complemented cream cheese slathered over – topped with juicy, succulent Huon smoked salmon, salty and fresh, a few scattered capers and what for me was the pièce de résistance – crunchy, sweet, snappy pickled onion – an interesting yellow colour, but full of pickled flavours – it really added to the complexity of tastes in the bagel. Loved it.
The waiters and barista are friendly, chatty and welcoming; in a rapidly expanding coffee shop environment in Margaret River, Sidekick more than holds its own.
