Pinelli Estate

Pinelli Estate in Caversham turns out wine of excellent value. Home to a very good restaurant Fillaudeaus, the wines have come on in leaps and bounds over the past several years under the stewardship of Robert and Daniel Pinelli. They do a brisk trade in flagon wine of good quaffing table and fortified wines, but it is their Reserve wines that should make you sit up and take notice.

Pinelli Reserve Vermentino 2014

A new release, this exhibited a bouquet of lifted apple and pear notes, moving to distinct lime and green apple tones on the palate. It is well balanced with good acid, and a long, crisp finish. (91)

Pinelli Reserve Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2014

With passion fruit and grassy notes on the nose, this has citrus and tropical fruit evident on the palate, with zesty acid, assisting it to a fresh, clean finish. (89)

Pinelli Reserve Verdelho 2014

This has vibrant tropical fruit and slight citrus tones on the nose, with a full and fleshy palate and a softly rounded finish, supported by crisp acid. This is a good example of Swan Valley Verdelho and very easy to drink. (90)

Pinelli Breanna Rose 2014

One of Lady FWO’s favourite rosé wines – I think at times they produce it just for us the amount that seems to come through our doors; a lovely fuschia colour, it has strawberry and confectionary notes on the nose, and a sweet, but not in any way cloying, palate. This is a wine for those who prefer a sweeter style, and is perfect for lazy afternoons in the courtyard at Chez FWO. (89)

Pinelli Reserve Merlot 2013

This is quite a soft wine, meant for early drinking; it has some black berry and red fruit notes on the nose, with subtle tannin and a generous plumpness on the mid palate. (88)

Pinelli Reserve Cabernet Merlot 2013

This medium bodied wine has blackberry and mulberry characteristics on the nose, with a hint of violets. On the palate it is juicy and soft tannins and oak support it to a nicely balanced finish. It should continue to develop in the short term (90)

Pinelli Reserve Shiraz 2013

A good example of Swan Valley Shiraz, this has dusty fruit notes on the nose, with a hint of mint. The palate has concentrated chocolate and plum flavours, and the tannins are subtle but persistent. This should develop well over the medium term. (91)

Pinelli Reserve Durif 2012

This is a lovely wine, and one of the few Durifs produced in WA. It is much less full bodied than the huge alcoholic examples from Rutherglen (wines which I love!); it is deep red in colour, with fresh black cherry and spice aromas. The palate is characterised by good strong tannins and sweet dark fruit and a firm finish. This also should develop well over the medium term (93).

Their reserve wines may well make one ‘sit up and take notice’, but it’s their quaffing wines which make me relax, lay down, and sleep…:-)
