With the COVID19 restrictions being eased and restaurants and pubs allowed to provide dine-in services, we decided it was high time to get along to one of our closest restaurants – Padburys – with limited seating it was of course necessary to book, but we were able to get in without difficulty for a weekend lunch.
The restaurant is housed in one of Guildford’s most historic buildings which many years ago was the main shopping destination of people from all around the district – Padbury’s Stores. Now it offers one of the town’s better dining destinations. And as I mentioned, it is very close to our house making it even more attractive.
They are licenced with a small but well put together list and from this we ordered a bottle of Wirra Wirra Mrs Wigley rosé – crisply dry with a bouquet of strawberries and full of raspberry and cranberry flavours.
From the shortened menu we chose one of their signature dishes – sizzling chilli and garlic prawns – and a roasted pumpkin salad, with added grilled chicken.
The prawns are one of the best of its type I think – plump, juicy prawns, with an aromatic and spicy sauce of zesty chilli and garlic, bubbling oil, a wedge of lemon and a bread to mop up the juices. A truly lovely dish and one of my favourites. A must if you enjoy this somewhat retro dish.
The salad – roasted butternut, all sweet and caramelised, with spinach leaves, juicy pear, candied walnuts, creamy fetta and succulent grilled chicken – was a delightful and delicious combo. Another very good meal.
It was great to get out and about again after so many weeks, and the food and service at Padbury’s made it all the more worthwhile. We will be back – soon!
