After something of a hiatus towards the end of 2019, I am back with a bit to catch up – so over the next week or so I will be posting some from late last year along with others I have visited in the early weeks of 2020 – to start a top little dumpling place from early December!
Down an arcade, just along from one of my favourite Northbridge bars, No Mafia, is the endearingly delightful Munchy Monk. A tiny place, serving up wontons, dumplings, pot stickers, all prepared on site in the diminutive kitchen, as well as a selection of beer and wine – also happy for you to byo.
With a bottle in hand we managed to nab a seat inside – maybe room for a dozen squeezed in, with another half dozen or so in the arcade out front -and started with a serve of the interestingly named Fisherman’s Spring Rolls – crisp fried rolls filled with a mix of chopped fish and Shepherds Purse, apparently a herb and member of the mustard family and adding a slightly peppery, vegetal flavour – served with a mildly spiced sriracha mayo. Like these a lot.
Then onto one of their well-known pot stickers – this one of hamburger dumplings, – beef dumplings served with pickles, ketchup, shredded lettuce, cheddar, all you need for a burger! – pan fried to a crispy base. A spot of chilli oil to give it a zip – all good, too.
And then Dan Dan noodles – the vegetarian option – al dente noodles, sloshed with sesame oil, served along with enoki mushrooms, freshly sliced cucumber and tomato, mustard vegetables and chilli oil, and as I opted for the extra spicy version , a tad more spice to give it added zestiness.
Munchy Monk is well worth a quick detour off William Street – simple and delicious food, great value, friendly faces – get along soon!
