Fig Tree Estate in Millendon, just down the road from Lamonts, produced its first wine in 2011 and opened a cellar door last year. I dropped by a couple of weeks ago to sample what they had to offer.
The cellar door is a small, but well fitted out area, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere – and a pet lamb who rushes to the fence to welcome visitors – a little change from the vineyard dog. They also offer a taste of, and sell, the delightful olives from Ol-ive Half Gourmet Olives.
To the wines:
2015 Verdelho – a wine with lifted tropical fruit aromas with a little citrus twist, a round, fruity and crisp palate, excellent acid; great current drinking but should cellar well over the next few years (90)
2013 Swan Valley Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz – bright, dark red with a plum and blackberry nose, soft, full palate with some cedary elements, well balanced, lingering finish (91)
2013 Swan Valley Shiraz/Grenache – dark red, mulberries, with confectionary hints on the nose; sweet fruit, plummy and savoury flavours, leading to a soft finish (92)
2012 Swan Valley Shiraz – chocolate and plum aromas, spicy, generous palate, supple tannins, some slightly stewed notes on the mid palate adding to its complexity; velvety finish (92)
