A couple of shop fronts along Railway Parade, opposite West Leederville station, have been gutted and re-jigged to form an impressive and inviting space – bottle shop, bar, restaurant – polished concrete, exposed bricks, soaring metal ceilings and glass, all combining to make for what should be a destination dining and drinking spot in what is fast becoming a foodie and wine and beer lover’s haven – West Leederville.

One side of Besk makes up the bottle shop, housing a wonderful array of wines and beers, with an emphasis on boutique and local products -as you would expect with one of the owners being Elliott Moore of Mane Liquor. As with other hot spots like Wines of While, Petition and Lamonts, you can choose a bottle to drink with a meal or take it away with you. As well, above the bar, an electronic display lists those wines available by the glass, with the house wines turned out by Dormilona’s Jo Perry.

The food is classic pub style – fish and chips, hot dogs, steak, as well as other dishes with a bit of a twist, and concentrates on seasonal produce – on the day we dropped in we were tempted by the hummus plate, a carrot dish, and saganaki with prawns – as well as a bottle of fabulous crisp, dry rosé, a mix of Merlot and Semillon, all raspberries and cranberries on the palate; perfect spring and summer drinking.

The hummus came with crisped chick peas, flat bread and olives, a splash of oil and dash of paprika – lemony and garlicky, smoky and the accompanying olives and chick peas provided flavour contrast and texture.

My dish of the day was the carrots – have to be some of the best carrots I have had – a mix of whole baby as well as sliced carrots, they were served with chopped dates, parsley and date sauce – a superb dish, crisp carrots, sweet dates, it was a knockout.

And the final choice – a wedge of grilled cheese, oozy and creamy, topped with crunchy prawns, and juiced up with a mildly spiced sugo – beautiful.

Sitting out in the small open terrace area, with the gentle sun beaming down, sipping on splendid wine (and later a beer from the excellent range on offer) and eating top quality food, well we were sold on Besk – and I reckon you will be too.
