I had heard and read some glowing comments about Toffee – a café and coffee shop in an arcade off Hay Street just to the east of Barrack – so popped in for a coffee when I was in town recently. Firstly it must be one of the smallest places in the city – tiny with maybe room for half a dozen people inside, but doing a pretty good trade in takeaway while I was there.
The coffee was very good – nutty and creamy, and served at the right temperature; the service friendly and prompt. Their forte is German style food – but how it can be turned out in that small space must be a wonder to behold – hearty goulash, schnitzel, German potato salad, sauerkraut – but it was only a tick past 9AM when I was there so it was just the coffee and a pretzel for me. Well I had to try something German….
The pretzel, a large twisted knot of baked bread with the distinctive pretzel skin was soft and doughy and chewy and salty – very good indeed.
So I will have to return to try some of the dishes another time – for now I can cheerfully say the coffee is very good and do try a pretzel!
