We dropped into the Vault in Kalamunda a week or so before Christmas for lunch after a spot of shopping in the town – the two of us plus daughter plus baby granddaughter and a couple of friends from close by.
The old Commonwealth Bank building has been converted into a large and airy restaurant – a veranda out front and the vault from which it takes its name still extant. Greeted and seated, with a high chair for the kid, we looked over the menu – an Italian influenced food including a pizza selection (although they were not on the day we were there) – and a small but reasonable wine list.
Between us a BLT, chicken parmi, calamari and prawn dishes were the choices and a couple of bottles of rosé- well it was near Christmas and I wasn’t driving.
The BLT was large and looked the goods – juicy patty, crisped bacon, cheese and the requisite tomato, lettuce and a side of well turned out chips – enjoyed by Lady FWO, a connoisseur of burgers, sliders and the like.
Similarly the Chicken Parmi was a generously sized serve and with plenty of well-cooked chook, melted cheese and bacon over a green salad and more chips.
The chilli and garlic prawns also satisfied – nicely firm to the bite, sweet fleshed and with a gentle hint of chill and aromatic garlic. With rice and little greens it was a good sized entrée dish.
Another from the entrée selection – salt and peppery squid also met expectations – the squid crisply fried and with a couple of dipping sauces to add it all came together well.
The Vault is a pleasant, family friendly place in the heart of Kalamunda; good setup, welcoming staff and the food sound Italian style, of generous proportion and good flavour. Worth a visit.
