The old Newport in South Terrace has certainly had a makeover since last (and that was a long time ago) I ventured in – it has been really rejigged, renovated and is now a great looking spot.
Five different bar areas – the front bar where we sat, Tiki Bar, and Bandroom for live music, courtyard area, another upstairs – it looks the goods.
We dropped past for a drink earlier this week, sat at one of blueish-green leather look banquettes at one end of the front bar room, and ordered a couple of glasses of Swings and Roundabouts Cabernet Merlot, on tap. This is a great, soft easy drinking style, good fruit, plummy aromas.
The place is an eclectic mix of new and old – stained glass windows sitting alongside the new furnishings – I was particularly taken by the use of old cane cray pots hanging from the ceiling as light fittings. Bright colours, plants, interesting murals and paintings, it has a welcoming and pleasing ambience.
The front bar has quite a few TVs hanging off the walls – a good spot to watch the footy as well.
While we didn’t partake of the food on offer we had a glance at the menu – good solid pub food but not the run of the mill– tortillas, nachos, fish and chips, jalapeno balls, fries, ribs, burgers, with daily specials as well.
This could become a regular drop in spot when we get down to Freo; although will Eagles supporters be welcome when we grab the flag from their grasp? Still hopefully the Dockers can at least boast a Brownlow – if Pridda doesn’t upset that applecart as well!
Anyway the Newport looks great and we will certainly be back.
