The Merrywell at the Crown Casino is one of the better outlets at the complex – well set-up, plenty of space – including an al fresco area out front for warmer days than when we stopped by – and entry from the drop off area, or from the casino floor. A long bar down one side beckons, but if you want food then an ordering hatchery across the way is the place for you – having said that the food comes out post haste.
Lady FWO and I had already eaten at another of the casino restaurants, but thought a little snack at the Merrywell was called for – the food has a bent towards Southern American cuisine, and the Baja Prawns tacos caught our imagination. And very good they were.
Three large soft shelled tacos, each with two good sized fried prawns, slathered with chipotle mayo – and this had a good kick, too – guacamole and finished off with chopped lettuce, coriander, capsicum and the like. The prawns were juicy and tender, it all came together well – excellent tacos, and excellent value.
The wine list is reasonable – much, much better than the one we encountered inside the casino – not extensive but any list with Vasse Felix, Snake and Herring and Plantagenet on it is OK with me – nice to see Paul Conti represented as well.
We settled on the lone rosé – Maxwell Little Demon from McLaren Vale. Made from Grenache it has a fragrant bouquet of cherries and strawberries, while the palate, displaying a little midway sweetness, finishes crisply and fairly dry –raspberry and cherry flavours abound. Good accompaniment to our tacos.
So, the Merrywell hits a lot of markers – good food at value for money prices, small but satisfactory wine list – very pleasant waiters – quick service – welcoming fit-out. One to return to, for sure.
