The Crêperie by Hexagone

A new French wine bar always interests me and when I heard about the Crêperie in Shafto Lane it seemed appropriate to get along on World Champagne Day and try it out.

Interior-2

With both indoor and al fresco seating it is an appealing little place – even more so when I had a wander around the racks of wine inside – where I found a small, but well put together, selection of wine – I was particularly impressed to see they were supporting one of my favourite small wineries, Swan Valley Wines with both a red and their excellent Pet Nat.

Cattier

The menu is as you may expect all about crêpes – galettes – savoury buckwheat flour crepes make up the first part of the menu while sweet crêpes made from wholemeal flour make up part 2.

The wine list has a selection of wine by the glass – but as it was after all a day to salute champagne we decided on a bottle of the best – in this case Cattier Brut – lovely fine bead, apple and yeasty aromas, and pleasant acid citrus on the palate. Made World Champagne Day just that little bit better!

Salmon

A galette each to start – L’Horizon for me – a nutty crêpe package filled with smoked salmon and chives, along with dill infused cream cheese – good flavours and textures, and complemented the champers very well.

Cheese-2

For my dining mate, well he went for the Mon Voisin Jean-Luc described as brie and more brie – and that is what it was – brie inside and more melting out the outside – a sprinkle of black and pink peppercorns – and as he is something of a sucker for ham he ordered ham to be added into the brie mix – and it all went well he said.

rum

Feeling as though a sweet crêpe was on the cards we ordered one to share but the host kindly gave us one each – the Saint-Barth – a delicate crêpe filled with juicy roasted pineapple which had been pimped up with rum with a shot of añejo rhum on the side – beautiful caramel tasting rum it went down a treat with the pineapple.

Certainly a great addition to Shafto Lane, which is filling with places to go and eat and drink – the crêpes or perhaps next time just a drink will hasten my return.
