Swings Taphouse, just over the bridge as you come into Margaret River, near the bakery, and where Wino’s Wine bar once was, is an offshoot of Swings and Roundabouts winery on Caves Road, is a fun place to drop in for a drink and a meal.
On a couple of levels, with a veranda out front, a fire place for those cool South west days and nights, open, well lit, Hills Hoists hanging from the roof, a kitchen that turns out quality food – especially their excellent pizzas – and a bar that serves up a range of wines on tap. What’s not to like?
The menu is all about sharing – and the pizzas take pride of place.
A couple of glasses of their house rosé, followed by a couple more of the Swings and Roundabouts Cabernet Merlot, along with a pizza, and a few other small dishes, and Lady FWO, me and the Dowager, sat around having a pretty good time.
Fremantle sardines topping some grilled sourdough, tomatoes and with jalapenos to provide a little kick were a great way to start.
The sardines were fresh and tender full of the flavour of the ocean, the bread crunchy and warm, and the crushed tomatoes gave the dish a little sweet savoury note.
Cauliflower seems to be everywhere these days and their caramelized version was top notch.
Earthy and tender cauliflower, with darkened crispy bits, supported with sweetness from dates, a zing from chilli, and an aromatic Middle Eastern buzz from the ras’el hanout spice mixture.
Swings pizzas are widely acclaimed and rightly so – dough that has been fermented and rested properly, cooked in a very hot log fired oven to perfection, and topped simply with fresh ingredients – not too much.
Grilled zucchini, tender prawns, cherry tomatoes, on a base slathered with tomato sauce and a shaving of mozzarella.
A duck leg, one of the day’s specials, was juicy, tender, falling off the bone, well-seasoned, and like all of the other dishes went down a treat.
The Taphouse is a fun, modern spot, welcoming and friendly, well trained and professional waiters, simple food but done well, good drinks, it is the full package.
