Pinelli Wines in the Swan Valley celebrated end of harvest with a function at their Caversham winery – sitting out under the vine covered patio on a warm autumn evening, Lady FWO and I, along with our daughter and son in law, and a good crowd of Pinelli habitués were entertained by Spanish guitar music, drinking the excellent Pinelli range, and eating food catered for by Simply Paella; this was a great night out.
The Simply Paella crew turned up in a food truck and set up two enormous paella dishes adjacent to the winery and proceeded to cook up a storm – the seafood dish was chock full of squid and prawns, beautifully cooked rice, soaking up the mildly spicy and smoky stock, scattered with green peas – the seafood was tender and moist but with a great firmness to the bite, the peas crunchy and fresh. It was a great dish to accompany the wine.
As well as the seafood a chicken paella was available – again well cooked rice, moist and mildly spicy, with plump juicy chicken scattered throughout – lovely!
The food was served in recyclable bamboo bowls, with bamboo eating implements, making the packing up and cleaning easy and with minimal fuss – an excellent idea.
We sampled a number from the impressive wine range – with Juliet Sparkling, Vermentino, Breanna Rosé and Cabernet Sauvignon the standouts.
The Juliet has lemon and apple aromas, with a crisp palate of citrus supported by fine acid while the Vermentino exhibited a bouquet of lifted apple and pear, moving to distinct lime and green apple tones on the palate. It is well balanced with good acid, and a long, crisp finish.
The Breanna is a lovely fuschia colour, has strawberry and confectionary notes on the nose, while the palate is dry, with a long satisfying finish; brilliant summer (and autumn) drinking!
The Cabernet has plum, blackberry and mulberry characteristics on the nose, with a hint of violets. On the palate it is juicy and smooth tannins and oak support it to a nicely balanced finish. It should continue to develop.
Luckily for me and Lady FWO, our son in law proved to be reasonably abstemious – daughter too much like her mother for any chance of that – and was fit and able to drive us home at the end of superb night out.
Simply Paella are simply brilliant! The Pinelli wines outstanding!
