Petition Wine and Merchant – a wine bar and wine library – what more could you want? An interesting, and ever changing selection by the glass, or you can choose a bottle from the wonderful collection housed in racks around the room – and even better if you find something that particularly appeals, well buy a bottle and take it home!
Well positioned in the heart of the State Buildings, opening out to the soaring ceilings of the Postal Hall where you can grab a table and amongst the greenery sit back and relax – food of course from Petition Kitchen is available – always delightful small dishes to tempt – among the offerings when we dropped by on the weekend anchovies with grilled bread, chilli and lemon; chopped broccoli with grapes and walnuts; various charcuterie selections and stracciatella with white radish and celery oil. You can also sit inside the bar itself amongst the racks and boxes of wine – it is a palace of temptation.
The wine selection encompasses many smaller and boutique wineries, especially those dedicated to organic and biodynamic production, both from Australia and overseas and which should entrance any wine lover – it certainly does me!
We popped in for a drink and wander on Saturday – the by the glass list had some appealing wines – Chalari Riesling from the Frankland, LS Merchants Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend, De Bois, and La Prova’s Adelaide Hills Pinot Nero – in the end we settled on a glass of Koerner Tiver rosé – made from a blend of Sangiovese and Sciaccerrolo this has a bouquet of strawberries, mandarin and a little cinnamon, while the palate is crisp and very dry, with fine acidity leading to a long refreshing finish.
And after a look over the wines on sale I couldn’t resist taking a couple home – Brave New Wines 2017 Petit Derriere – a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which have come together to produce an outstanding bone dry rosé – and a Carignano and Tannat blend from Amato Vino – based in Margaret River, and sourcing grapes from all over – these from Happs Three Hills Estate in Karridale. I look forward to trying this.
Petition Wine Bar and Merchant has it all really – good wine and food in a wonderful location, with top staff, and best of all you can take away those wines that really impress.
