Taking the place of the Grapeskin, alongside the Brass Monkey, Patriots is a US style sports bar – large screens around the room, with 8 hanging above each side of the centrally placed bar – all showing different sports.
When we stopped in last night at various times baseball, AFL, soccer, cycling (with Phil Liggert chatting away, I missed him during the Tour this year), American football, motor cycling, were on display on the big screens. Music pumping out, but not an uncomfortable level, and the bar staff decked out in red, white and blue, stars and stripes tees all add to the ambience of a modern sports bar.
The food, too, references the US – burgers, pizza, ribs and nachos – we tried a bowl of these – good size, crisp and crunchy corn chips, slathered in a generous layer of sour cream, salsa, jalapenos and melted cheese – good filling and warming food for a chilly night.
With these, forgoing the various beers on tap, we ordered a couple of glasses of cabernet sauvignon, which did the trick and after giving up on trying to finish the large bowl of nachos we ventured off, happy we had dropped by, and sure we will be back.
This is an improvement on what was before which had certainly run down in the last few years before its close – good spot for a drink, snack and a dose of sport.
