The Northbridge Brewing Company, set right in the heart of Northbridge alongside the Piazza, looking over the green grass, is a brewery and pub and a most welcoming joint. Sitting out on the shaded patio is a top place to eat and drink and watch the world go by.
The menu has been slimmed down a tad since I was last there and while it is still geared towards standard pub food – fish and chips, burgers, chicken parmi, it also has some dishes a little different – a Kimchi sandwich sounded appealing, as did the sweet potato tacos and this latter dish was our first choice.
A couple of tacos in a soft tortilla, roasted sweet potato, onion, salsa, coriander and cashew cream, topped with shaved radish – a really pleasant and enjoyable dish.
Popcorn shrimp also appealed – deep fried crumbed prawns, came with ghost chilli aioli – a nice zip of chilli but nothing too extreme – I have ghost chilli growing at home and they are extraordinarily hot.
And then, an exceptional deal is offered – with any drink purchased all day, any of the 5 pizzas on the menu – usually going for around $20 – is yours for $4. Amazing – so we had to try this out, choosing the mushroom and truffle oil version.
Fluffy base, nice bit of char, and a topping of soft, meaty mushrooms, sweet caramelized onion and a splash of truffle oil adding both bouquet and flavour – well turned out pizza and what a bargain it is.
Our drink? A bottle of Malbec from the Frankland River’s Ferngrove winery – dusty blackberry aromas, a touch of violets and crushed fennel seed leading into a plump palate of mulberries, plums and milk chocolate. Excellent WA malbec.
Yep, the NBC is certainly a pleasant place for lunch, the food is good, the drinks fine, and the service prompt and full of smiles. They have held a chilli festival for the past few years in June and it is continuing this year – the chilli crab I had last year was spot on and I would love to get the chance to try it again.
