With their name a cheeky reference to their sister bar, the Bird, Northbirdge Dining opened a couple of weeks ago. The dining room is attached to Northbirdge Wine – a wine bar and wine shop – and is in the old Young Love Mess Hall space (which was once also a Chinese restaurant as you can probably tell from the oriental style opening between the two spaces.)
On one side is the wine shop selling an interesting array of wines to take away or consume in, with the anticipation soon of a selection of serve yourself wine by the glass with a purchased card, and then through to the other space with the bar and where most of the dining tables are set up.
The food? Well it was most impressive on our visit. We sampled a selection of dishes with a number of highlights, with all really geared to complement the wines available.
Snacks – salty tapenade stacked high on toasted bread, along with focaccia with olive oil for dipping -were perfectly attuned to get the taste buds going, as well as calling for a drink or two. Another of these was an early highlight – salted cod smeared on crisp farinata – excellent.
Three other dishes that linger in the memory and call for an early return visit were, firstly, a bowl of whipped mussels, served with crunchy kohlrabi crudites scattered with dill leaves – brilliant and was my dish of the night until…
Octopus salad – paper thin shaved octopus arranged as a covering for a mound of tomato salad – beautiful occy, juicy tomatoes, crisp leaves, sensational.
And not be denied a ripper vegetarian dish – Delicata squash, roasted and filled with whipped seeds – sweet, nutty, earthy, fabulous.
Blind Corner Governo proved a top class companion to all of these dishes – Blind Corner are turning out some beauties from their Quindalup vineyard and a number of these are available in the wine shop.
Northbirdge Dining and Wine have arrived with a boom and look to become a popular go to spot in Northbridge. Get there!
