Mrs S, on the corner of Whatley Crescent and Eighth Avenue in Maylands, is a small, quirkily decorated coffee shop/café which has built up a dedicated following in what is a pretty competitive Maylands strip environment. As well as seating inside a few tables and chairs on the footpath provide alternative outdoor eating opportunities.
At breakfast, and particularly on weekends, they are very busy and it can be tad difficult grabbing a spot – but the three of us had made a booking so that was not an issue.
The menu covers the gamut of breakfast dishes – eggs all ways, bacon, bagels, avocado smash – and of course coffee, tea, fresh juices – as well cakes and the like.
Settling in, a coffee, tea and juice to hand we tackled our various orders –eggs benedict on the one hand – a couple of lightly poached eggs, sitting on a bed of sautéed spinach leaves, a dollop of tangy hollandaise sauce, sprinkle of smoky cayenne and crusty toasted bread – well cooked, pleasant, ticked the boxes.
Another serve of poached eggs, again a nice oozy run, and a generous side of bacon and a bowl of tangy tomato sauce – again met all expectations.
Finally, rose and berry panna cotta – a little wobble full of fresh flavours – served with fresh berries, grapes, chopped pistachios, sliced stonefruit, a touch of kiwi, a scatter of petals to pretty it up, and creamy yoghurt sprinkled with quinoa and almond crumble – an attractive and enjoyable dish.
Our coffee and tea hit the mark as did the fresh apple and orange juice.
Mr S is a pleasant little spot, with friendly waiters (oh by the way you order and pay at the counter, but food and drink is delivered to the table), popular and turning out good food at pretty good prices. Well worth a breakfast stopover.
