Master Lee in Hay Street in the city is a noodle place – a long narrow dining space and maybe a dozen tables, with a raised deck at one side with a few more tables and chairs – and from my experience a very popular lunch spot – I was there well before midday but by the time I left a little after 12 it was completely full of customers slurping up their noodles.
I was interested in the Seafood Laksa and it came pretty quickly – a good sized bowl, with yellow egg noodles, bean sprouts, prawns, fish slices, squid and octopus in a spiced coconut broth – all reasonably good, and the seafood was nicely cooked – but gee the chilli component was nowhere to be seen. They have four levels of chilli heat – mild, medium, hot and “the bomb” – the latter of which I went for – it was as mild as my breakfast toast – not a hint of heat. Not sure whether this is the usual or they simply took no note of my request. So as far as the laksa is concerned not what I was looking for….although the prices are right.
If you are looking for a pretty cheap bowl of well cooked noodles by all means head along to Master Lee, but if you want to spice up your life this is probably not the place for you.
