Maddison Cottage in Guildford is a tearooms and gift shop – inside are a number of rooms with gift ideas – homewares, flowers, soaps, all manner of things – tables and chairs, and the counter with a display of cakes, scones, muffins, cupcakes, tarts and biscuits.
At the front of the cottage looking out onto James Street is an enclosed boardwalk courtyard with tables, chairs and umbrellas – and, on a sunny day like today, was just the place to sit, read the paper and enjoy a coffee and cake. As I did….
The coffee was served in a pretty china teacup, was of good quality – right temperature, creamy and with a pleasant bitterness at the end. Enjoyable.
My cake selection – raspberry and white chocolate – was excellent – the cakes are all house made by the two owners, Jan and Claire – and this one was moist and crumbly, sweet and full of raspberry flavours, topped with velvety white chocolate, and a few dabs of cream alongside. Could certainly have that again. In fact all of the cakes and the rest on display looked tempting.
Service was prompt, friendly and welcoming – all more reason to go back. (Apparently they also do a pretty good high tea which I must also try in the future.)
