Locale Mio, Italian tapas and pizza restaurant, opened recently in Johnson Street behind the Guildford Hotel. It is a stylishly set up room, a dark tile serving area giving pride of place to a copper wood fired pizza oven, moving along to a striking bar with a wall of spirits behind it, wall murals and very comfortable leather look chairs.
Open from 11.30AM Wednesday to Friday and from 9AM on Saturday and Sunday, with an extensive menu – breakfast dishes include lemon ricotta pancakes, scrambled eggs with Italian sausage, and panini with roasted pork and peppers – while the lunch and dinner menu is divided into Fried Tapas – think zucchini patties, tempura calamari, baccala croquettes – Cold Tapas – beef carpaccio, burrata with truffles and tomato –Hot Tapas – Polpette Pomodoro, baked cauliflower steaks – Pasta – Salad and around two dozen different pizza – both white and red (all available as takeaway as well). And desserts of course.
We popped in during the week and chose a bottle of Sicilian Nero D’Avola from their neat wine list – selections from WA, Australia and overseas – the Lamura is a medium bodied organic wine with a savoury, herbaceous nose, plenty of cherry and raspberry flavours on the palate – good food wine.
From the menu we ordered a couple of the tapas dishes –baccala croquettes and the Polpette and a pizza – the Siciliana to match the wine!
The croquettes – crisply fried with a salty, succulent filling of cod – sat in a puddle of zesty puttanesca sauce – spot on.
The beef and pork meatballs, juicy and tender, came with an outstanding house made tomato sauce – rich, aromatic and brimming with tomato flavours. Crusty bread to mop up the remnant sauce.
Our pizza also hit the mark – thin, crisp base, topping of mozzarella, anchovies, oregano, garlic – I had a little chilli on the side, of course. This was a very good pizza indeed.
We couldn’t quite manage dessert but peach bellini pannacotta has my name on it for next time.
Locale Mio is a great addition to Guildford – well set up, excellent food and wine, friendly welcoming staff – very good location, too (they have outdoor seating as well for warmer days and nights). An absolute must!
