The last time we saw Michael Griffiths and Amelia Ryan performing their tribute to Olivia Newton John and Peter Allen was downstairs at the Maj in August with Amelia 7 and a half months pregnant with Archie (who arrived in October) but still suited up in lycra and zipped around on roller skates as they got “physical” in Xanadu. And we were looking forward to their appearance at this year’s Fringe.
Last night in the Spiegeltent at the Pleasure Gardens, the duo reprised the show, running through all the hits of the two Australian stars, while all the while keeping up an entertaining patter and bringing the crowd into play – never more so when Steve (retired AFP officer) was dragooned from the crowd equipped with a head band and joined Livvy in the Lets Get Physical dance moves.
Michael Griffiths is a consummate cabaret performer and his depiction of Peter Allen was on point – the highlights his rendition of Tenterfield Saddler and Australia’s unofficial national anthem, I Still Call Australia Home.
Likewise Amelia captures the essence of Livvy, a few costume changes to emulate those made famous by ONG, and certainly gets the crowd involved – apart from Steve’s efforts she shimmied through the crowd to the alarm of many before she picked out and settled on Bryce’s knee (after spearing his foot with her stiletto) and serenaded him with Hopelessly Devoted to You.
I Honestly Love You – a Peter Allen composition made famous by Livvy – brought the show to a fitting finale and then with Amelia on skates and Michael in a slinky red spangled cutaway shirt the duo left the tent to appreciative applause. This is a show not to be missed.
