With Taste Great Southern kicking off on March 23rd until April 9th, this is the perfect time of the year to get along and try out the French inspired cuisine at one of Albany’s best restaurants, Lavender Cottage in Peels Place.
We were down last week and after receiving many recommendations went along for lunch – and so glad we did!
An old worker’s cottage set in a garden of, yes, lavender, the four rooms make up the dining areas with a mix match of furnishings and views of the chef turning our his creations from what is a very small kitchen indeed.
They are BYO which allows the opportunity to bring along one of the excellent local wines on sale at the bottle shops around town, with well-shaped glasses and ice bucket quickly to hand to house our rosé.
The lunch menu ranges from a light soup/sandwich/salad choice to more traditional and more substantial dishes, and from the choices we ordered Aumoniere de Fromage de Chèvre and off the blackboard specials, fish of the day.
The first of these – a large fist sized parcel of salty, oozy, creamy goat cheese wrapped in crisp and crumbly filo pastry, with the addition of peppered pears adding a sweet, zesty note to the cheese.
With slices of smoked salmon, crunchy fresh peas making up a salad, along with fresh green leaves and soft boiled eggs, and a good slosh of sour cream dressing, this both looked and was appetising indeed. Lovely contrasts of flavour and texture made for an outstanding and generously sized lunch.
Blue eyed trevalla, the fish of the day, came with a couple of freshly caught prawns draped over it – the fish moist, succulent but retaining pleasing firmness to the bite, while the prawns were squeakily fresh. Crisp stems of asparagus lay alongside the fish which sat on a bed of nutty wild rice and a slippery, salty and buttery scallop sauce.
A large bowl of fresh salad leaves, tomatoes and cucumber made up another substantial and very well prepared and presented dish.
The food at Lavender Cottage is excellent – the choices interesting and innovative – with specials of the day allowing the chef to take advantage of fresh ingredients to hand. Recommended.
