Kappys, an Italian trattoria style restaurant in Guildford is one of our go to places when we feel like a good meal and don’t want to venture too far – it’s just around the corner from our house after all! We are always assured of a friendly welcome at this family run establishment and best of all, very good food – and a fine range from excellent pizzas through to great pasta, seafood, meat and vegetable dishes.
The wine list, although not extensive has a fine selection, including some Italian wines – on the most recent visit we went for a Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon from Grace Farm – deep red, a bouquet of blackcurrants and mulberries; smooth, medium bodied palate full of plum flavours and a little Margaret River mint.
As well as the a la carte menu a number of specials are always listed on the blackboards around the rooms – and we ordered one of these – spicy lamb shank with pasta, as well as one of my favourites – swordfish steaks and squid cooked in a chilli, tomato and olive sauce.
The shank was a substantial dish indeed – the lamb was meltingly tender, falling from the bone with a touch of the fork, while the spice level provided a medium level of chilli zestiness; the pasta cooked al dente and a lot of it, too – a dish for a healthy appetite.
My fish was as usual succulent and tender, the squid retaining a pleasant firmness, while the spice level (again as always I order extra chilli) was spot on, just enough to bring a warm glow to my mouth and a gleam of perspiration. The dish came with a mound of vegetables – potato, carrot. Excellent hearty meal.
Kappys turns out very good food at good prices – with a lovely ambience – friendly welcoming – many of the customers are regulars which goes to the quality of the place. One of our favourites and we will be back soon, I am sure.
