Ivy and Jack is the refitted and very modern looking restaurant and bar attached to the Holiday Inn in Hay Street, in the middle of the CBD. The Inn is still being retrofitted so a little noise and scaffolding from the works may put you off a little, but don’t let it – inside it is a haven of elegance and tranquillity. The décor with its emphasis on metal and stone is eye catching and the furniture a good mix of comfortable chairs and sofas.
At the front is the coffee area, while further in is the bar proper. The wine list is not overly large but very well put together with some excellent wines available – and a good selection by the glass (the only glitch, no rosé by the glass!). But Lady FWO and I overcame that disappointment when we dropped by on our way home, and set up near the front on a couch, by ordering a glass of Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Riesling. A brilliant expression of Riesling from the Clare Valley it has lemon rind and floral notes on the bouquet, while the acidic palate exhibits flavours of lemons and nectarine, moving to a crisp, clean finish.
Looking over the menu we spied a number of dishes that will compel us to return to eat – lemon and gin cured salmon; baby beets with ashed chèvre and seafood spaghetti for example. Along with steak frites, pork cutlets, duck cassoulet, charcuterie boards; pizzas, burgers and dogs it seems to have something for everyone.
The service was affable and welcoming, the wine very good, the surroundings modern elegant and comfortable. In its reincarnation Ivy and Jack should prove to be a great addition to the CBD scene. We will be back, soon….
