It would be hard to argue against the proposition that the Rose and Crown in Guildford has the best beer garden in Perth – it is a fabulous space with an array of seating options – plenty of greenery to catch the eye, as well as the beautifully restored building and outbuildings of the oldest pub in WA.
On a warm day or evening it is something special – of course in cooler months open wood fires and gas heaters warm it as well – it is really a place for all seasons. And it is our local, only a couple of hundred metres from our front door.
On Monday evening, with some warmth in the air, we went on down and found ourselves a niche at a table near a water feature adjacent to the old stables and ordered a bottle of Castelli Cabernet Merlot while we waited for our food to arrive.
This wine, from the Great Southern, was very smooth and easy drinking indeed – a bouquet of ripe blackberries and chocolate with a little hint of liquorice, while the palate was alive with rich plum and mulberry flavours.
As to our food – Texas chicken roll on one hand and Japanese spiced squid on the other were both extremely well turned out choices from the bar nosh menu.
The roll – not sure if the chook was Texan or it was the design! – came as a crisp, toasted ciabatta roll full of very juicy and tender chicken pieces, with a mildly spiced chipotle mayo drizzled over, fresh, crunchy coleslaw and topped with melted cheese. Delightful! And it was a very generously sized sandwich indeed.
The squid – tender, succulent pieces fried in spiced crumbs – flavours of mild chilli, sesame, ginger, nori seemed to be about the place – again a well put together and well turned out dish – with mayo and crisp fresh rocket on the side it was another hit for us.
The Rose and Crown is one of the gems of Guildford – it has so much going for it – good food and drink, superb historic surrounds, excellent staff – a friendly, welcoming pub. Recommended.
