Friday Drinks with the FWO

Each Friday I hope to be telling you about some of the wines I have enjoyed recently – suggestions for the weekend ahead!

Windance 2017 Glen Valley Rosé

What a pretty label and the wine inside loses nothing by comparison. Very pale pink in the classic Provencal style this Shiraz rosé from Margaret River producer Windance Estate has a fragrant bouquet of Red Delicious apples and a touch of peach juice. The beautifully dry palate shows strawberry and cranberry flavours supported by zingy acidity.

Caravino 2017 The Rendezvous Rosé

From small (and fairly new) Swan Valley producer Caravino Wines The Rendezvous, made from Tempranillo, is a pretty blushing pink in colour, with a bouquet of cherries and musky Turkish Delight. The palate is beautifully crisp, flavours of tart raspberries and rhubarb lead to a dry satisfying finish. Made by Alon Arbel from Bella Ridge it is just the ticket for picnic drinking.

Moss Wood 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon

From the cellar, the 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon. Although the cork was soft and needed the Ah So to get it out the reward was great. A deep burgundy in colour with a little brick red tone at the rim, it has still, after 30 years, a lilting note of violets, some characteristic Margaret River mint and rich black plum aromas. The palate has flavours of mulberries, blackberries and plums. Silky sustained tannins indicate a few more years yet. A wonderful wine and a testament to the Cabernets of Moss Wood and Margaret River.

Unico Zelo 2017 Truffle Hound

What a delicious wine this is. Truffle Hound from Unico Zelo is a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera and was wonderful served chilled. The bouquet leaps from the glass with aromas of cherries, liquorice and cardamom while the palate is all juicy red fruit, raspberries, cherries, with some grippy tannins to take it home. Wonderful stuff.

Small Fry 2017 Barossa Riesling

Delicious off dry Riesling from Barossa producer Small Fry Wines. So very pale in colour with lemon blossom aromas underpinned by spicy notes and wafting tropical fruit. Spice and sweetened lime juice flavours burst on the palate; quite a heady brew with soft lemon to finish.

Sam Vinciullo 2017 Warner Glen Red

A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon served a little chilled was simply delicious. Aromas of plums and blackberries, a back note of crumbled bay leaves, followed by a medium bodied mellow palate – flavours of liquorice and black cherries and mint. Lovely.

Express Winemakers 2016 Mount Barker Malbec

Another scrumptious wine from Ryan O’Meara. The 2016 Malbec has smoky notes and almost a meatiness on the nose along with plums and liquorice. Firm tannins support flavours of redcurrants and plums, dark chocolate and spice.
