Friday Drinks with the FWO

Another selection of recently enjoyed wines – why not try some yourself this weekend?

Marq 2017 Serious Rosé

Lovely drop from Mark Warren, made from Grenache. Cherries and strawberries dominate the bouquet with a waft of crushed lemon blossom. As the name suggests this is no sweetie…crisp and elegant with sour cherry and pomegranate flavours overlaid with Turkish Delight. Enjoyed this at our local, the Rose and Crown in Guildford.

Kim Crawford 2016 Rosé

Cherry and strawberry aromas set up a lively fresh and crisp palate with flavours of ripe red berries and a touch of watermelon in this Merlot dominant rosé from Kim Crawford hailing from New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay. Pleasant afternoon drinking and a pick up from one of my favourite wine shops – Gooseberry Hill Cellars.

Firetail 2013 Semillon

I love a Semillon with a bit of age and this is a cracker from Firetail in Margaret River. The colour is starting to deepen into gold but still with green threads through it. The bouquet shows nectarine and lemon blossom with a little honey. A touch of caramel on the palate is boosted by vibrant acid and tart citrus. A lovely wine which will only continue to develop over coming years. From my cellar.

Unico Zelo 2017 The River

A Nero D’Avola from Barmera in the Riverland. Rich red it has a lovely aromatic bouquet of blackberries with dried spice notes – sage, basil – and a touch of aniseed to finish. Medium bodied with juicy blueberry flavours, crunchy and lusciously easy drinking. These guys are making some great wine. Bought from the winery, on line.

Tassell Park 2015 Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot from Treeton near Margaret River. Fragrant notes of crushed violets, mulberries, liquorice and spice…stunning nose…and a velvety palate of blackcurrants, ripe plums, milk chocolate underpinned by silky tannins. Beautiful drinking. Another out of the cellar.

Low Boi 2017 Riesling

Love Great Southern Riesling and this is a beauty. From Low Boi in Porongurup it has lime cordial and citrus blossom aromas and then lovely chalky talc notes, vibrant acid, lemon, lime flavours. Beautiful. And such a wonderful label from Noongar artist Bella Kelly. Had this at one of the State’s best bar restaurants – Billie H in Claremont.

Island Brook 2015 Merlot

A lot of style in this 2015 Merlot from Margaret from Haywood Wine Company’s Island Brook Estate, in Margaret River. Rich deep red with aromas of ripe plums, mulberries and chocolate. The chocolate appears on the palate too along with more of those lovely plummy flavours. Smooth medium bodied and drinking beautifully. Sent to us to try by the winery – and we loved it!
