Friday Drinks with the FWO

Oops, after forgetting to send a list of recommendations out last week, this should make up for it!

Friday

Arlewood 2014 La Bratta

Another excellent wine from Margaret River’s Arlewood. 2014 La Bratta is a mix of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon. Heady bouquet of cherries, mulberries and plums. The palate is rich and smooth with flavours of dark chocolate, black cherries and spice. Lovely wine now but will develop even more. Bought from the winery on our last trip to Margaret River.

Ravensworth 2017 Seven Months Field Blend

Orange wine – the 7 Months Field Blend from Ravensworth Wines in Canberra. Pinot Gris, Riesling, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc. Pale copper orange colour; floral nose of baked quince, spice and a hint of earthy truffles. The crunchy palate shows tart orange, grapefruit and scrumpy apple cider flavours. A ripper. Tried it at Shadow Wine Bar and again at Harvey-Leigh’s.

Cos Rami 2016

2016 release from Sicily’s Cos Rami. Made from Inzolia and Grecanico fermented in concrete tanks with 2 weeks skin contact. Orange gold hue with a bouquet redolent of dried apricots, honey and herbs. The palate is chalky and crunchy with nutty flavours as well as dried fruit and spice. Tasted at No Mafia.

Ashley Estate 2016 Pinot Noir

The 2016 has the cherry aromas with a dash of earthy mushrooms you expect and the palate is all tart fruit, truffles and lingers on the tongue. Very good. Brought along to a lunch by a mate who bought it at the winery on a trip to the Perth Hills.

Al di la Fiume Fricando

Fricando from Al di la Fiume in Emilia Romagna is made from an unfamiliar grape to me, Albana. A lovely apricot orange in colour it has some oxidized notes on the nose together with lemons and dried orange peel. The palate shows some saltiness, herbal tones and gentle citrus flavours. Tried this at No Mafia in Northbridge.

Mazza 2017 Fortified Bastardo

The first release of Mazza Wines of Donnybrook fortified Bastardo. Fragrant palate of ripe plums with subtle brandy spirit. The luscious palate has notes of plums, toffee apples and palm sugar. Lingering in the mouth this should develop superbly. Sampled at Wine Show by the Bay.
