Creatures Nextdoor is the younger and smaller sibling of Little Creatures on the waterfront in Fremantle. With bench and stool seating inside, another area on the lawn out front, and a loft it has plenty of options.
The day we dropped by they were doing a roaring trade selling tasting trays of the beers and ciders on offer, but Lady FWO and I always happy to buck the trend ordered a couple of glasses of rosé and looked over the menu; a good mix of pub style food – sliders, fried chicken, spare ribs, sardines and prawns – we opted for something a little lighter – pumpkin slaw and a plate of felafel.
Meanwhile our rosé was going down well – from Hainault in the Perth Hills, it has a slightly sweet mid palate, but still finishes reasonably dry – so we had another and then our food arrived.
The slaw, a good mound of shredded pumpkin, carrot, cabbage, bean sprouts, onion and doused in creamy, garlicky dressing was full of crunchy fresh flavours; nice and light and just what we needed.
Felafel – very moist and crumbly inside while still having a firm crisp skin – came with a dollop of lemony hummus, a pile of fresh salad and a few slices of toasted flat bread. Spices were spot on and the hummus well executed. The flat bread mopped up what remained of the hummus.
A light, healthy lunch – with a glass or two of wine, of course!
Creatures is well worth a visit.
