Padbury’s is the closest restaurant to our house in Guildford so we get along reasonably often and last night, as the weather turned cool, but without rain, we walked down for dinner. It was comfortable and warm inside as we took up a seat in the alcoves at the front looking out through large windows to the streetscape outside.
They are licenced with a small but well put together list and from this we ordered a bottle of Margaret River Fermoy Estate Cabernet Merlot – a smooth easy drinking wine with aromas of blackcurrant and plum, flavours of mocha, blackberries and mulberries on the palate.
From the daily special list I chose a bowl of seafood chowder, while Lady FWO went for one of her favourite dishes from Padburys – prosciutto wrapped chicken breast.
The chicken as always was a generous serve – the breast juicy, moist and tender, cooked with a wrap of salty, crisped prosciutto, and filled with a mix of spinach, chopped dates, sun-dried tomatoes and camembert lived up to expectations and with creamy mash, earthy mushroom sauce, baby carrots and green peas in their shells made for a hearty and warming meal.
My large bowl of soup was swimming with small pieces of smoked fish, crunchy well-cooked prawns and tender squid – the fish added a smoky, salty note to the thick, creamy broth – and with a chunk of Italian loaf and butter was just the ticket. A very good bowl of chowder.
That was enough for us – the serves as I mentioned are generous and so off we went – happy with the food and the value, impressed by the friendly and professional service, loving the wine, and all in all sure to return soon to this neighbourhood gem in Guildford.
