One of the highlights of a visit to the North Fremantle strip – centred on Queen Victoria Street – is the excellent small bar, Mrs Brown. With its nod to Queen Victoria herself, the eye catching bar with its racks of wine against exposed brick walls, to the warm and comfortable, and suitably eclectic furnishings, to the brilliant courtyard at the back – complete with wood fire for those cooler nights – it has a lot to offer.
All of the wines behind the bar are available by the glass – no need to a written list just have a look at what’s on offer and place your order. For me that was the outstanding Saperavi from Perth Hills producer, Side Project (part of the Fairbrossen stable), while my dining chum opted for rosé from Lethbridge (near Geelong) winery, Between Five Bells.
Then it was out to the courtyard, sitting under the trees, in the dappled sunlight of a warm, sunny autumn day – perfect!
A smallish menu is on offer – cheeses, olives and the like – but with Flipside Burgers right next door, you are welcome to order in something a little more substantial.
Mrs Brown is a top little bar – warm and welcoming staff, great range of wines by the glass, well set up and the courtyard is simply the best (except the unfortunate leniency shown to smokers). Definitely get along and experience it for yourself.
