Aurora is the snappy new bar on the sixth floor of the Melbourne Hotel in Milligan Street. With an indoor space, protected by bi-fold glass doors and outside an airy wooden deck with views across the CBD and over to Northbridge, it is already proving popular in its first couple of weeks of opening. We arrived mid-afternoon and it was almost full inside, and was out on the deck.
It has a small but well thought through wine list, with about half a dozen each of red and white available by the glass, as well as a couple of sparkling and a rosé – although I would like to see an Australian rosé on the list rather than the only French entrant.
A glass of Singlefile Riesling and another of Runfree Pinot Noir, both from Denmark, proved very satisfying as we sat back and admired the view.
They are still feeling their way in relation to both wine and food, so the wine list may change over coming weeks as customer reaction is assessed – and as for the food at the moment light, small dishes such as spinach and potato croquettes, chicken tulips, salmon bruschetta, chargrilled octopus and a charcuterie share plate are on offer.
Aurora sits well in the revamped and upgraded Melbourne Hotel development and should be a hit – we all love a good rooftop bar after all. Relaxed ambience, good views, friendly waiters and bar staff, uncomplicated but pleasant food, and good wine, all on top of the world – what more do you need?
