I should start be saying how much we enjoy the food at Apple Daily – its Asian style street inspired cuisine is always on point, well priced and presented. However the last couple of times we have been the service has become a little less than it was on previous visits – not lax in any way, but attentive to the point of hovering. We felt rushed and this detracted from what was very good food – it is sometimes a fine line for waiters to be available but not TOO available.
To the food – well it was as usual well prepared – we had a couple of the larger dishes – Assam Prawns and Smoked Barramundi salad, along with a side of mushroom fried rice.
The salad of cubes of smoked fish – crisped, smoky, juicy and salty – with glass noodles and Nahn Jim was spot on – the ingredients combined perfectly to produce a dish of impressive taste, aroma and texture. We really enjoyed this.
The Shark Bay Tiger Prawns were likewise well cooked in their shells, retaining a firmness to the bite and the sauce nicely balanced between sourness and spice – cubed pineapple added a little complementary sweetness to the dish.
The rice, mixed through with mushroom, cucumber, coriander and pickled vegetables, matched well our choice of mains. Very moreish.
The drinks list is well designed with a good range of beers and a well curated selection of wines including many aromatic whites which really suit the food. On this occasion however we went for bottle of 2014 Finisterre Cabernet Sauvignon from the well regarded Margaret River winery Robert Oatley, who have recently opened a cellar door at the old Laurence Estate on Caves Road.
This wine has lovely blackcurrant aromas, with underlying hints of violets and mint. The palate is full of ripe fruit, chocolate tones, and with pronounced dark plum notes. It has smooth tannins, and is an elegant and well-structured wine.
Apple Daily is an impressive looking place, the food is very good indeed and the wine selection notable – just the service let it down a little this time – just hold it back a bit – but that won’t prevent us returning; we really like the food.
