A favourite hangout on Barrack Street, Alfred’s is down a steepish flight of stairs, and dimly and moodily lit – with an eclectic décor of news-papered walls, pictures of rock stars, guns and money in see through enclosures under the floor, and music playing in the back ground adding a touch more colour.
On this visit I spotted bottle of Four Pillars newly released Bloody Shiraz Gin on the shelf and following a suggestion from the barman settled on a Gimlet with the gin, aged in shiraz casks imparting a reddish hue, as the base – lime juice and a sweet, luscious port reduction added complementary flavours – refreshing and moreish I have to say.
As you imagine Alfred’s does a range of pizzas and with Lady FWO turning up to help I ordered just that – with a topping of gorgonzola, mushrooms and fresh rocket on a wonderfully crisp and crunchy thin base, this was a brilliant pizza as seems always the case here.
With it a glass of South Australian Fox Gordon’s Nero D’avola (made from Sicily’s most famous variety) with a bouquet of cherries and dark chocolate and a palate blackcurrant and dark plum flavours, dusty and juicy. Perfect!
This is a top small bar, from the same guys who run the outstanding gin joint Frisk, and should be on your list of places to hang out for drink and good simple food.
