The little coffee bar off the lobby of the Alex Hotel has recently made the move to include wine and other drinks on its offerings, along with a selection of food. Quite a small area, it has a communal table to one end with large lantern lights above it, as well as some comfortable chairs and coffee tables, and near the entry off James a bench along the window adjacent to the bar.
When I stopped in after noticing wine bottles behind the counter, I found the changes had taken place earlier in the week, so settled down into one of those comfortable chairs and looked over the menu and wine list.
The food includes, anchovy on tomato toast, cheese puffs with Persian fetta, pork and veal meatballs, salmon rillettes, potatoes with salsa verde and haloumi with black sesame and honey, while the wine list has around a dozen by the glass offerings.
My choice was an orange wine from Italy –Fillippo Manetti Gea – made from Albana it has a bright orange hue, with a nutty bouquet, along with notes of citrus and peaches; the palate has some herbal characters, apples and dried fruit on the palate.
Always good to find another small bar in Northbridge so will be dropping into the Alex again soon. And of course you can still grab your coffee as before.
