A Roast to Remember, a Community Vision initiative to raise awareness and funds to support people living with dementia, was launched at The Shoe in Yagan Square last week.
The aim of the programme is to encourage people to get friends and family together for a roast dinner to have a good time and raise funds to help purchase a community dementia bus – this bus will focus on the wider community who don’t have ready access to local services to trial some of the innovations such as Virtual Reality and therapy techniques to help deal with a loved one with dementia.
The campaign website has also launched an appeal for fundraisers to submit their best roast recipes with a chance to win prizes and be part of a campaign recipe booklet to be produced in 2019.
The launch at the Shoe heard from Vince Garreffa who spoke movingly of his mother’s experience with dementia and the impact on his family, while tasting some roasted delights from the Shoe kitchen and sipping on wines from Millbrook Wines in the Perth Hills. Chief Winemaker Damien Hutton was also on hand to talk about the wines which included the first release of their Single Vineyard Chardonnay.
Val Henderson spoke about her husband Bill who began showing signs of dementia in his early 60’s. He was a Fire Fighter and started to forget what shift he was on. Community Vision has helped Val get Bill into a Social Centre two days a week from 10-3, which has given her some well deserved respite.
Owners of The Shoe, Paul and Jo Higgins, also announced they will be introducing Roast Chicken Sundays to assist with fund raising – from 11.00am each Sunday until 2 December you can enjoy half a butterflied chicken, parmesan, pea and savoy cabbage salad, honey soy roasted carrots and gravy – sounds great. And of course Millbrook Wines are also on hand to wash it all down.
If you are looking to buy a roast for your fundraiser then get along to Mondo Butchers who will give you a 10% discount as well as donate 10% of the price to the campaign.
Another sponsor, Ozeating, will donate $5 from every WA Foodies membership bought – the membership will allow you to save hundreds of dollars when dining at participating restaurants and cafés. Participating restaurants will also make a donation for each meal purchased.
Thanks to Sandra Devahasin and team for organising this fabulous and worthwhile event.
