77 Social is one of the newer additions to the St Georges Terrace scene, in the newly renovated Allendale Square complex. It has a downstairs café style dining room – popular with the lunchtime work crowd on the day I dropped in – with coffee, juice and sandwiches and the like all the go.
Up a flight of stairs, however, and you come to a rooftop bar with a view down the Terrace – which should prove pretty popular on summery evenings.
The food on offer reflects that down stairs – a host of breakfast dishes as well as burgers, a Korean style fried chicken sandwich, their take on a Reuben, two or three pasta dishes, steak frites and in one of the few nods to non-meat eaters a couple of gozleme. A bit more work on the menu may shift 77 Social up a notch as a dining destination; as it is it is hardly inspiring when compared to other bars around town.
The wine list, similarly, could do with a lot more imagination- there are 8 or so each of reds and whites, and two rosé – some sound wine choices but little to excite – and when so many of Perth’s small bars are offering up interesting and innovative wines, 77 Social so far misses the boat.
This is a place with potential but from my perspective there is work to be done to achieve it – the drinks list should be first off the rank, and a move from café food may help, too. But get along and have a look, the bar upstairs is a pleasant little spot to watch the workers pass by beneath you, just so long as you don’t expect too much.
