21st Amendment

In the shopping square area in Newcastle Street across the road from Duende, 21st Amendment – the name taken from the 1933 amendment to the US Constitution that repealed Prohibition – has recently opened in Leederville and we were invited along to have a look and experience what it has to offer – and it has a lot.

Exposed bricks along one wall, painted on the other, concrete floors, it has an airy, open feel, with windows at the front looking out to the square outside – a variety of seating options – couches, tables and chairs, benches – spaced around the room, cosy but never feeling overcrowded.

As far as food is concerned they have decided to forgo preparation on premise, rather have a selection of dishes supplied by two local restaurants – Ria Malay and Jus Burger – and we were tempted by dishes of salt and pepper squid, satay, sliders, spicy fried chicken and more – plenty of choice , great idea.

The wine list is top notch as is the range of beers on offer – Feral, Colonial, Sierra Nevada, Pirate Life, Two Birds, Nail, Rocky Ridge, Cheeky Monkey and so many more, and they do some pretty good cocktails as well – Espresso Martinis and the like.

As I said the wine list is very, very good – well put together, thoughtful choices – from all around WA and Australia, as well as some international inclusions. Marq, Amato Vino, Fairbrossen and their Side Projects offshoot, Watson Family, Kalgan River, Evoi, Harewood, Spinifex, Higher Plane, Xabregas the list goes on….

We began with Pink Moon rosé from Amato Vino, a natural wine of exceptional character and style, followed up with Side Project Saperavi – a rare variety in WA and so well done- and concluded with a delightful Tempranillo from Perth Hills maker, Fairbrossen.

21st Amendment is simply one of the best spots to head for in Leederville – everything is on point – the wine, the beer, the cocktails and the food offerings. Friendly, welcoming, we had a ball and you will too….recommended.
